Count pressure
If placing an animal would complete its quota and force the rest of the line into three-in-a-row, that placement is wrong.
Pip: Two owls sit at the left. If the third owl went in cell 5, cells 3 and 4 would both be foxes — fine — but cell 6 is a fox too: three foxes. So cell 5 is a fox and the last owl goes in cell 4.

Why it works
Count pressure is the first technique that asks you to imagine a placement rather than just read the board. Ask: if this were an owl, would the leftover cells be forced into a crowd?
